Pantebøker
with Jeff Huset
Pantebøker are historical Norwegian mortgage and property deed books used to officially register (tinglysning) legal agreements and transactions related to real estate. These records are a crucial historical and genealogical resource because they contain official copies (avskrifter or kopier) of documents such as
Deeds (skjøter) for land transfers,
Mortgages (pantebrever) and other loan agreements,
Rental/Cottager's contracts (husmannssedler),
Pension contracts (føderåd) outlining agreements for care as part of an inheritance,
Surveys (målebrev) and property divisions (skylddelinger) and
Servitudes and other agreements concerning property rights.
Jeff Huset is a long time N-AGA member, multi-year president of Telelaget and volunteer at the Norway House Haugo Bibliotek. He will share information on pantebøker, documents that were recorded as early as 1650. Jeff will explain what is included and where to find them.
This will be a hybrid meeting, available in-person and via Zoom. N-AGA members will be sent a Zoom link prior to the meeting.
